Sirs:
Your homework is to annotate two pieces of writing by Sandra
Cisneros: “Six Brothers” and “Only Daughter.” As you might have guessed from
today’s activator, both have very much to do with family, gender roles, and
culture.
While you annotate, do your best to really engage with the
text. Clarifying what you’re reading by summarizing is good, but don’t let that
be the extent of it: make personal connections, consider your own opinions
about the things Cisneros is writing about, think about how you feel abut the
speaker as you read, try to connect this to other texts you’ve read or other
art you’ve experienced, and—as always—try to make connections to the world
around you. As an added bit of incentive, I want you to know that Cisneros is
the author of the next text that we will be reading together, House on Mango Street, so the more time
you spend trying to understand her priorities as an author and as a woman at the
beginning of this process, the more likely you are to pick up on her major
themes in the early phases of Mango.
That is all. If you have any questions, find the answers. If
you run out of options, email me.
Word hard: luck means nothing.
