Tuesday, Twosday, Toosday

Blues:

I'm going to cut right to the chase here, sirs: your homework is to read Chapter 19 of TKAM, Tom's testimony. The assignment, along with the chapters you will be reading throughout the week, have been uploaded to our class Dropbox.

While you read, annotate pages 7-11, paying particularly close attention Atticus's, Tom's, and Gilmer's subtext. Actively try to discover what each character's motivations are. What is Tom trying to show the jury, and don't simply tell me "his innocence." His testimony has to be much more subtle than that. Think about what it must've been like for him in that particular situation, during that particular time period... Similarly, what are Atticus and Gilmer trying to do? How are they trying to make Tom look? What are they doing from their positions to manipulate the jury?

I'll post more questions tomorrow along with your assignment for the period, so remember to check back here during class. Your substitute will be giving me a very detailed overview of how class went, especially in regards to who was on task and who was not. If you do not have a substitute and find yourselves in the auditorium, you are still responsible for all of the assignments posted here throughout the week.

Don't let me down, and more importantly don't let yourselves down.

Work hard: luck means nothing.
