Blues:
Today's discussion on Night was good and your thoughts eye-opening. Tomorrow we're going to be working on the second body
paragraph of the synthesis essays, but I want to give you a head's up
about Friday's work so you can get a head-start.
By Friday, you should read up to page 65 of Night--that
means between today and Friday, you have to read about 20 pages (or,
ten pages a night). Tomorrow you will be given 30 minutes of S.S.R., so
hopefully that helps.
While you read, I want you to
find 5 quotes that strike you or otherwise interest you and respond to
them using the PDF titled "Reader Response" in our Night
sub-folder in Dropbox. Also, please pay very close attention to the way
Elie's relationship with his father changes, the way the prisoners
treat each other while in the concentration camps, and any imagery
related to the night or the darkness--comparing multiple instances of
any type of imagery has the potential to reveal important elements of
texts that you might not otherwise notice. Remember that.
For
your information, a "good quote" is a part of the text--it could be a
sentence, a piece of dialogue, or an image, or a small action by one of
the characters that reminds you of a "big picture idea," or theme. This
book is about many different things, including what it means to be
courageous, what it means to be a good father, what it means to be a
good son, how people change under difficult circumstances. If you come
across things that make you think of those ideas, write them down!
That being said, a "good response" is honest, thoughtful, and relevant.
Work hard: luck means nothing.
